Sabbatical Inspirations –
The Variety of Africa

This tour is an opportunity to discover the unique flora and fauna of southern Africa and use the time for personal development in the African wilderness and contributing to various species conservation projects. Your trip will start in two camps in South Africa and/or Botswana where you will go on a two month course to train as a field guide. You will learn what a ranger does, study native animal species and wild plants and get an insight into the geological and climate conditions in the area. At the end of your training, you will know how to organise group tours, guide course members safely through the wilderness and share your enthusiasm for African flora and fauna with them.

Course certificate in hand, you will continue to Zululand in South Africa. This is the location of a species conservation project where you will help for a month, using a range of equipment to locate endangered animals, read tracks and document their behaviour. You will then travel to the Okavango Delta in Botswana to help document, identify and monitor numerous animal species. Eight weeks later, you will continue to Damaraland in Namibia, where you will spend a week building protective walls and opening up new water sources before observing local desert elephants up close and personal. The final stop of your sabbatical will be the Madagascan islands of Nosy Komba and Nosy Be You will help to protect natural habitats in Madagascar by supporting a variety of research and conservation projects.
