Nature Travel Madagascar: Wilderness Experience Wild Masoala
Step into one of Madagascar's last great wilderness areas and discover the magic of the Masoala Peninsula with us!
Remote on the northeast coast, it protects Madagascar’s largest remaining lowland rainforest. Half of the island’s unique species live here, many found nowhere else on earth. It’s the only natural home of the critically endangered red ruffed lemur and a refuge for rare birds, reptiles and plants – a true biodiversity treasure.
Your home during this group experience is the remote Masoala Forest Lodge, nestled between the coastal rainforest and the Indian Ocean. From here, you will experience Madagascar in its purest form: lemurs climbing through ancient treetops, pristine beaches where the forest meets the sea, and the rare opportunity to unwind.
Of the 14 days, your adventure begins with an overnight in Antananarivo, is then spent exploring the wild beauty of the Masoala Peninsula for 11 nights, and concludes with a final night in Antananarivo - all experienced with your group.
Led by our expert guide Meg, it includes guided walks through the primary forest (also at night) and coastal explorations. With time to listen, observe, smell and truly be present, you will experience not only the beauty of Madagascar, but also the challenges and resilience of its nature and inhabitants.

Arrival in Madagascar
Your journey begins with an international flight to Madagascar, where you will land at Ivato International Airport (TNR) near the capital Antananarivo (flight not included). There, you will meet your PWE group, as well as your group leader, and spend the first night together in Antananarivo.
The following day, you will depart together from Antananarivo on a domestic flight to Maroantsetra (WMN). From here, a short transfer by land and a 40-kilometre boat trip across Antongil Bay will take you to the remote Masoala Peninsula. Your home for the next few days: the Masoala Forest Lodge.
Staying at Masoala Forest Lodge
Seven raised safari tents on stilts await you; four tents have sea views, while three are located in the rainforest. Each tent is shared between two travellers. Hidden among the trees and surrounded by Masoala National Park, the tents provide sweeping nature views and classic amenities like a western toilet.
In the camp, electricity is available 24/7, powered by solar energy with a back-up generator. The lodge is also conveniently close to the Tampolo Marine Reserve, giving you access to the protected forest, the coast and coral reefs.
Private Wilderness Experience – Wild Masoala
Our PWE Wild Masoala invites you to slow down, immerse yourself in nature and connect with a group of like-minded people. Rooted in the spirit of Mody – the Malagasy word for “going home, returning” – this journey invites you to experience a deep sense of connection.
We want to feel a sense of belonging, wonder and presence as we enter the wilderness. This journey is not only about what you see, but also about listening, observing, smelling and being mindful in the moment. You will learn about the complex interrelationships of the ecosystem.
Activities during the PWE
Your days in Masoala are filled with adventure and new experiences: guided hikes take you deep into the ancient rainforests, while birdwatching excursions introduce you to the colourful and often endemic bird life.
On the water, turquoise bays await you for snorkelling and paddling, offering you a whole new perspective on the beauty of the peninsula. Add to that relaxing hours swimming in the sea and exploring the diverse marine life in the Tampolo Reserve.
As night falls, you’ll set out on a guided night walk to experience the forest as it comes alive after dark — spotting nocturnal creatures and tuning in to the many sounds that fill the nighttime canopy.
You’ll also take part in open discussions and workshops on conservation, wildlife, and biodiversity, gaining deeper insight into the fragile balance that sustains this remarkable ecosystem and the efforts being made to protect it.
Wildlife on-site
The Masoala Peninsula is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife: Madagascar itself has been described as an “alternate world” due to the uniqueness and rarity of its plants and animals. On Masoala, encounters with endangered Red-ruffed and White-fronted lemurs, brilliantly colored birds like the Helmet Vanga, and countless reptiles and amphibians are frequent and thrilling. Over 300 bird species have been recorded here, making the forest a living showcase of biodiversity.
Note: While wildlife sightings are possible, they are never guaranteed. The magic is in the wild’s unpredictability.
Leisure and board
When you are not exploring, relax at the Beach House, where a natural history library invites quiet learning and the forest provides its soundtrack. Enjoy wholesome three-course meals crafted from organic lodge produce, fresh rainforest fruits, and locally sourced seafood, blending Malagasy and European styles.
Daily tea time and sundowners, followed by after-dinner drinks around the beach campfire, complete the day.

1. Masoala Peninsula
The Masoala Peninsula in north-eastern Madagascar is one of the island’s last great wilderness areas. Covered by dense rainforest that stretches all the way to pristine beaches and coral reefs, it is home to an incredible diversity of plants and animals, many found nowhere else on Earth. Protected by Masoala National Park, the peninsula is a paradise for nature lovers, hikers, and adventurers seeking an unspoilt corner of Madagascar.
Background about the PWE Wild Masoala
The Masoala Peninsula is Madagascar at its wildest: remote, richly biodiverse, and still largely untouched. Encompassing tropical rainforest, mangroves, and coral reefs, it is one of the few places on Earth where land and sea ecosystems remain so intimately connected. This rare meeting point creates a haven for life – from charismatic lemurs and vibrantly coloured birds to reptiles, amphibians, and extraordinary plants. More than half of Madagascar’s species live here, making it one of the planet’s most important biodiversity hotspots.
But Masoala’s richness is also fragile. Unsustainable logging, slash-and-burn agriculture, and human pressures continue to threaten its ecosystems. The Private Wilderness Experience at Masoala Forest Lodge offers more than an adventure: it is an invitation to engage with conservation in action. Guided by naturalists, guests learn not only to recognise the species around them but also to understand the delicate balance that sustains them.
Travelling to the peninsula supports the protection of the region's forests and reefs, helping ensure that Madagascar’s wild heart endures. The PWE is a journey into one of the last true rainforests of our planet – and a reminder of why preserving such places matters.
