Responsible Travel Policy
At Natucate, we believe that travel can be a force for good. Our trips are not just holidays but opportunities to connect deeply with nature, understand local communities, and experience the world in ways that leave a positive impact. We aim to move away from mass tourism and fast-paced itineraries, offering journeys that allow you to slow down, immerse yourself in your surroundings, and return home with new knowledge, inspiration, and a sense of responsibility.
Every decision we make, from choosing a partner project to designing an itinerary, is guided by our commitment to conservation, ethical engagement, and meaningful learning. By travelling with Natucate, you are part of a shared effort to explore, understand, and protect some of the wildest and most remarkable places on Earth.
1. Protecting nature and supporting biodiversity
Nature and wildlife conservation lie at the heart of everything we do. We work exclusively with projects that meet the highest ethical and ecological standards. This includes on-site verification of partner projects to ensure they genuinely contribute to conservation, respect local ecosystems, and prioritise animal welfare.
We do not support direct wildlife interaction for non-professionals, animal breeding facilities, or activities that exploit animals for tourism. Our trips are designed to allow observation in natural settings, guided by trained professionals who teach participants how to behave responsibly in the wild - most of them locals.
Travellers contribute to the protection and restoration of habitats through project fees, park contributions, and support of environmental NGOs. Our programmes also educate travellers on minimising their impact, for example, reducing plastic use and respecting fragile ecosystems.
Many of our programmes also contribute to ongoing conservation research through citizen science. Travellers may support local teams by helping to collect relevant field data on wildlife, habitats, or species behaviour. This information can contribute to scientific studies and help conservation organisations better understand ecosystems and develop effective protection measures.
In several destinations, participants also learn about the challenges of human–wildlife coexistence. Conflicts between wildlife and local communities, such as elephants and farmers, are a complex reality in many conservation areas. Through educational activities and project work, travellers gain insight into these perspectives and may support initiatives that help reduce conflict and promote long-term coexistence between people and wildlife.
By choosing Natucate, you help preserve biodiversity and contribute to meaningful, long-term conservation efforts.
2. Learning, connecting, and personal growth
A core principle of Natucate is that travel can and should be transformative. Every journey is designed not only to show the beauty of the world but to foster understanding, knowledge, and a sense of responsibility.
Before each trip, travellers receive thorough preparation, including guidance on local culture, political situations, recommended behaviour, and ethical conduct. Throughout the trip, our experts provide insights into conservation, ecology, and community, encouraging participants to engage thoughtfully with their surroundings.
We believe that slow, immersive experiences encourage deeper learning. Spending longer periods in one place allows travellers to develop meaningful connections, understand local challenges and successes, and return home with a richer perspective.
3. Ethical approach to volunteering
As part of our ethical approach to travel and volunteering, Natucate does not offer children’s aid or orphanage projects. While the intention to help children is often genuine, short-term volunteering in these environments can unintentionally cause harm and has been linked to exploitative practices in parts of the tourism industry.
Instead, we focus on carefully selected conservation, environmental, and educational initiatives where participation can create meaningful and responsible impact.
We also recognise our responsibility in addressing unethical wildlife practices within the travel and volunteering industry. Natucate was the first German travel provider to be recommended by the Campaign Against Canned Hunting (CACH), a non-profit organisation working to combat the lion-breeding industry in Southern Africa, as an ethical volunteer agency.
CACH highlights the critical role of volunteer agencies in selecting responsible project partners. Many wildlife volunteering programmes involving lion cubs do not contribute to conservation, but instead support commercial breeding operations that ultimately feed into canned hunting practices.
By taking a clear stance against such activities and committing to strict partner selection criteria, Natucate actively contributes to raising awareness and promoting ethical alternatives. We believe that the travel industry has the power to influence demand and redirect it towards genuinely responsible conservation efforts.
4. Creating local value and supporting communities
Natucate believes that tourism should create meaningful benefits for the people and communities in the destinations we visit. Travel can be a valuable source of income and opportunity when it is designed thoughtfully and carried out with respect.
If possible, we work with locally owned accommodations, restaurants, guides, and suppliers. By prioritising local businesses and expertise, we aim to ensure tourism revenue remains within the destination and helps strengthen local economies.
We follow the principles of socially responsible tourism and decent work. Our partnerships are built on long-term relationships, mutual trust, and collaboration on equal terms, ensuring fair treatment of staff, guides, and partners.
Travellers receive guidance on respectful behaviour and cultural sensitivity to engage thoughtfully with local communities and minimise potential negative social impacts.
Where appropriate, travellers also have the opportunity to support local educational or conservation initiatives, helping to further strengthen the communities and environments they visit.
5. Reducing emissions and promoting conscious travel
Natucate is committed to reducing the environmental footprint of our trips. We prioritise shared transport and public transport wherever possible. We support low-impact travel choices and encourage longer stays in one location to reduce the need for frequent flights and travel emissions.
Our recommended accommodations are carefully selected for their awareness of environmental impact and commitment to conscious practices. While approaches vary, many take steps such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, or offering plant-based meals to minimise their footprint.
By promoting slow travel, we encourage travellers to spend more time in one place rather than moving quickly from one destination to the next. Staying longer in a single region not only reduces transport-related emissions but also allows travellers to experience the area from a deeper and more meaningful perspective. Longer stays in one accommodation also reduce the need for frequent cleaning cycles, such as washing bed linen and towels. In this way, we aim to ensure that every journey is not only memorable, but also responsible towards the planet.
6. Responsible standards for our trips
To protect people, wildlife, and habitats, all Natucate travellers agree to follow our Code of Conduct:
- Prepare thoroughly for each trip, respecting local cultures, laws, and project requirements.
- Follow all rules and instructions provided by project managers or guides.
- Treat wildlife, habitats, and local communities with respect.
- Avoid activities or purchases that harm animals, plants, or the environment.
- Minimize resource consumption and waste.
- Communicate openly with Natucate or local partners if issues arise during your trip.
(Excerpt from our Code of Conduct)
Our approach ensures that every trip is safe, educational, and beneficial to the destinations and communities we work with.
Transparency and continuous improvement
Natucate publishes this Responsible Travel Policy to demonstrate our commitment to responsible, ethical practices and meaningful impact. We continually review our operations, partnerships, and trips to improve our practices, drawing on feedback from travellers, local communities, and conservation experts.
Travelling with Natucate is a chance to experience nature authentically, learn responsibly, and contribute positively to the world around you. Each trip is designed to leave you inspired, connected, and aware of the difference that conscious travel can make.
