Nature Travel Tanzania: Wilderness Experience Wild Rubondo and Serengeti
Join us on our PWE Wild Rubondo & Serengeti and discover the diversity of Tanzania!
This Private Wilderness Experience combines two special and contrasting wilderness regions of the country: the remote Rubondo Island Camp on Lake Victoria and the legendary Sayari Camp in the northern Serengeti National Park. Our PWE is not a classic safari trip, but invites you to experience the wilderness consciously, intensively and in peace – a journey you will remember for a lifetime.
On Rubondo Island, you will discover an almost untouched world of rainforest, papyrus swamps, and lake shores. Guided chimpanzee treks, boat excursions, and fascinating birdwatching bring your days to life. From Rubondo Island, you will fly directly to Sayari – a dramatic shift from a forested island to the impressive Serengeti.
At Sayari Camp, you will experience the vastness of the Serengeti during the low season: fewer vehicles, more space, more tranquillity. The camp is located near the permanent Mara River and offers ideal conditions for getting to know the region in depth while enjoying great wildlife sightings – even when it is not the Great Migration season.
During this Natucate journey, you will travel with a small group of like-minded people, accompanied by wilderness experts. Along the way, you will learn about ecosystems, animal behaviour, and the intricate connections of nature, while also having ample time simply to be present.
Be part of this extraordinary PWE and discover Tanzania's wild diversity with a small group – from Rubondo Island to the Serengeti – an unforgettable nature adventure awaits you!

Experience Wild Rubondo and Serengeti
Discover the diverse contrasts of Tanzania on our Natucate group tour: from the remote Rubondo Island to the endless savannah of the Serengeti at Sayari Camp.
Arrival in Tanzania
You will travel independently to Tanzania and meet your group in Arusha. The first night is spent together in a hotel in Arusha – the perfect opportunity to settle in after the international flights, get to know one another, and attend a briefing.
The next morning, you will fly from Arusha Airport (ARK) for approximately 1.5 hours to the Rubondo Airstrip, followed by a 20-minute transfer to Rubondo Island Camp, where your slow safari starts.
Activities during the PWE
On Rubondo Island, your exploration includes chimpanzee treks, boat trips on Lake Victoria, early morning birding cruises, sundowners, visits to Bird Island, and selected drives to the northern plateau. Forest picnics and relaxed observation of island life from the camp are also part of the experience.
At Sayari, the focus is on extended game drives, often full-day with picnic breakfast and lunch. Also, there may be occasional walking activities. Sundowners round off your days of exploring the wild. In addition, you will enjoy discussions and workshops on nature, the land's history, and conservation.
Accommodation in Tanzania
You will spend 8 nights at Rubondo Island Camp followed by 6 nights at Sayari Camp. Both lodges offer spaciousness, comfort, privacy, and direct connection to the surrounding wilderness. All accommodations feature private bathrooms with Western toilets, hot water, and private verandas. There is Wi-Fi, communal and dining areas, and each camp offers a swimming pool. While Rubondo Island Camp offers views over Lake Victoria and its vibrant wildlife – especially the birds – Sayari is set amidst the iconic Serengeti grasslands, with woodlands lining the Mara River.
Leisure and dining
Breakfast is often served as a picnic to allow an early start to the day. Lunch is usually at the camp, except during full-day activities, when picnic arrangements are provided. Dinner is shared communally with your group. All drinks are included.
Between activities, there is time to retreat, shower, read, relax, or simply observe the wilderness from the camp and connect with your fellow travellers.
The PWE Concept
This journey is for those who want to experience the wilderness, not just see it. On this Slow Safari, you are invited to slow down and feel the rhythm of nature. There is plenty of space for observation, wonder, and personal discoveries. Workshops and discussions on nature, wilderness, and conservation complement the hands-on experience. Exploration is shaped by the moment and guided by the interests of the group. The PWE is led by Meg McSmith, inspired by the values of seclusion, authenticity, and shared discovery of the wilderness.
Wildlife in Tanzania
A particular highlight is Rubondo Island’s chimpanzee habituation programme: here you can observe these primates respectfully in the wild – a rare opportunity in East Africa.
Elephants, giraffes, sitatungas, bushbucks, and hippos also roam freely on the island. Over 300 bird species make Rubondo a paradise for birdwatchers.
At Sayari in the northern Serengeti, you may encounter elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, giraffes, as well as hippos and crocodiles. The region is renowned for its high predator density and diverse habitats along the Mara River.
Your journey emphasises slow immersion, allowing the wilderness to reveal its surprises. By engaging your senses, you’ll experience the full rhythm, sounds, and spirit of these extraordinary landscapes and their inhabitants.

1. Camp Rubondo
Rubondo Island Camp is secluded in Rubondo Island National Park in the south-west of Lake Victoria – surrounded by dense rainforest, quiet bays and extraordinary biodiversity. The small, nature-oriented camp combines a comfortable safari experience with genuine seclusion and enables intimate encounters with the wilderness, including chimpanzees, rare bird species and a rich variety of wildlife.
Rubondo Island Camp is a place for anyone seeking tranquillity, unspoilt nature and authentic experiences away from the classic safari routes.
-
2. Camp Sayari
Sayari Camp is located in the northern Serengeti and offers an exclusive base for unforgettable safari experiences. The camp combines comfort with proximity to nature and allows for intensive wildlife viewing, dramatic landscapes and authentic encounters with the wilderness.
-
3. Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti National Park is known for its impressive wildlife migrations. It is home to two million wildebeest, zebra and antelope in its vast landscapes. An impressive game reserve, it is home to Africa's legendary "Big Five" wildlife. Since 1981, the Serengeti National Park has held UNESCO World Heritage status.
A highlight of the Serengeti National Park is the annual wildlife migration: huge herds of wildebeest, gazelles and zebras make their way to the various watering holes, pursued by potential predators. The migration is considered one of the most remarkable natural events in the world, which makes the Serengeti National Park so popular. There are also around 3,000 to 4,000 lions, as well as many cheetahs, spotted hyenas and jackals, which can be admired at close range during safaris.
Background of the PWE Wild Rubondo and Serengeti
This PWE embodies the concept of a conscious, slow safari. Rather than aiming for as many wildlife sightings or locations as possible, the focus is on understanding landscapes, animal behaviour, and ecological connections. Rubondo Island and Sayari showcase two extremes of Tanzania – lush island rainforest with a lake, and open savannah – highlighting the country’s incredible diversity.
This Natucate journey is designed for those who wish to experience the wilderness, not just consume it. With time, respect, and curiosity, it fosters a deeper connection to nature and to the people you share this experience with. A journey with meaning – far from the usual safari routes.
Note: The 2027 PWE takes place in the low season, not during the Great Migration.
