Location of Camp Timbavati
The camp is located within the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve and offers an open ecosystem with Kruger National Park, the largest game reserve in South Africa. Timbavati is home to many different animals such as hyenas, leopards, rhinoceroses, elephants, buffalo, and the rare and majestic white lion – along with 40 other mammal species and incredible birdlife. South Africa is located in the southern hemisphere, meaning the seasons are reversed compared to the northern hemisphere. South African winter occurs in July and August.
Summers are warm to hot, with temperatures ranging from the mid-20s °C on cooler, cloud-covered rainy days to 35–37 °C on average. Occasionally, temperatures may exceed 40 °C. Winters are typically dry, with morning temperatures averaging around 6 °C. Afternoon temperatures are usually in the mid-20s, ranging from 18 °C to 32 °C. While winter showers can occur, they are uncommon. Summer rains typically come as heavy thunderstorms or extended frontal rainfall.
Arrival at Camp Timbavati
- Airport: Johannesburg
- By road: Approx. 5.5 hours’ drive from Johannesburg
- Flight: Scheduled flights are available to Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit. From there, a transfer to the camp (about 50 minutes) needs to be arranged.
- Meeting point: The instructor will meet all students at Enkhulu Gate, Timbavati, at 2:00 PM.
Life in Camp Timbavati
Welcome to the world of the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve – enjoy your guide training as a real adventure in one of Africa’s most fascinating corners.
Accommodation - Meru tents:
The camp has 10 walk-in Meru tents, each shared by two students and equipped with two single beds. An unobtrusive electrified fence surrounds the camp.
Bed linen is provided, though you are welcome to bring an extra pillow or blanket. Shared sanitary facilities and a central communal area overlook a large dam, often visited by hippos and crocodiles.
While blankets and duvet covers are provided, we recommend bringing your own sleeping bag. The camp includes a common area and a fireplace.
Electricity at Camp:
Electricity is limited in the camp. The main area has power, and batteries can be charged in the computer room/library. Tents have no lighting, so studying at night can be difficult. Please bring a headlamp and an additional battery-powered lamp.
Drinking Water:
Tap water is safe to drink.
Beverages:
Non-alcoholic drinks are available for purchase (cash only). Fruit juice is served with meals. Coffee and tea are available throughout the day.
Laundry:
Laundry service is available for a small weekly fee. Hand-washing powder is also provided for those who prefer to wash items themselves.
Cell Phone Reception:
Mobile reception in the camp is limited. To maintain a peaceful atmosphere, we kindly ask that you limit mobile phone use. Charging facilities are available – please bring your own adapter. Wi-Fi is available, but limited and not suitable for high data usage.
Currency:
The currency in South Africa is the Rand (ZAR). There is no ATM in the camp, so please bring enough cash. For up-to-date conversions, visit www.xe.com.

On-site Support:
A training instructor, assistant instructor, camp coordinator, camp cook, and cleaner are usually present during your stay.
Vehicles:
Open Land Rovers and Land Cruisers are used for game viewing.
