16-Day Uganda Exploration

A safari in Uganda focusing on chimpanzees and mountain gorillas, as well as other wildlife and species protection.

Sunset in Ishasha

Arriving in Uganda

You will arrive with your international flight in Entebbe, where you will be greeted by your driver guide. The transfer takes you to the Boma Entebbe, a former guest house turned boutique hotel set in tropical gardens. Here, you will meet the other participants of your group.

There is no programme for the rest of the day, just space to arrive: a walk through the grounds, time by the pool or some last-minute shopping.

Accommodation during the safari

Seven properties carry you through the country: The Boma Entebbe opens and closes the trip, while thatched cottages at Murchison River Lodge overlook the Nile. Semliki Safari Lodge sits between forest and savannah on the edge of the Albertine region, and Ishasha Wilderness Camp lines the Ntungwe River with canvas tents. In Bwindi, Buhoma Lodge sits directly at the forest boundary before you move south to Gorilla Lodge in Rushaga for the habituation experience. Mihingo Lodge is built into the hills above Lake Mburo. All rooms are double or twin.

Activities during the Uganda safari

The rhythm shifts with each park: Murchison Falls brings a game drive and a private boat safari to the foot of the falls. Chimpanzee trekking takes place on foot in three distinct forests, with a visit to an active chimpanzee research project in Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve.

Two boat trips, on the Mabamba wetlands and Lake Albert, offer separate opportunities to search for the shoebill.

Gorilla looking serious while sitting in the bush

Bwindi is the heart of the journey, with a standard gorilla trek followed by a gorilla habituation experience in the Rushaga sector. The walks are shaped by where the gorilla families are that day, with the habituation experience allowing considerably more time in the forest.

A visit to Ride 4 Women adds a quieter afternoon between the different activities. At Lake Mburo, you can swap the vehicle for a bike or a horse (additional fee).

Note: You’ll find the detailed day-by-day itinerary further down the page.

Wildlife in Uganda

Witnessing mountain gorillas and three different chimpanzee communities is at the heart of this journey. Along the way, you can also encounter elephants, lions and Rothschild’s giraffes, one of Africa’s most endangered giraffe subspecies. Murchison Falls alone is home to 76 mammal species and more than 450 recorded bird species.

Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve, an eastern outpost of the Congo Basin's Ituri Forest, brings species found nowhere else in Uganda, forest elephant and giant forest hog among them. The possibility of spotting the shoebill appears twice on this itinerary, first at Mabamba, then again on Lake Albert.

Meals and downtime

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are mostly included at every lodge, with a packed lunch on longer transfer days (details on the itinerary).

Sixteen days leave downtime between activities: by the pool in Entebbe, on the deck above the Nile at Murchison Falls, or from the veranda in Toro-Semliki with the forest close by.

Drinks beyond the included meals and any optional extras are billed separately.

Our safari perspective

Our Natucate team has travelled to those regions to meet our local partner and see the region and wildlife trekking firsthand. Sixteen days is a deliberate choice: it slows the pace enough that no experience feels rushed. Moreover, it makes room for a third chimpanzee trek, a research project visit and a second shoebill search that shorter itineraries have to leave out.

The emphasis throughout stays on primates, on the forests they live in, and on the people working to protect both.

Background to the 16-day safari in Uganda

Primates and the forests they call home are the common thread running through this journey. You will encounter three different chimpanzee communities on three separate days. Each experience is shaped by its own forest: the dense lowland canopy of Budongo, the remote Congo Basin outpost of Toro-Semliki, and the narrow river gorge of Kyambura. In Toro-Semliki, you will also gain insight into a research project, offering a rare glimpse into what long-term chimpanzee research looks like on the ground.

Bwindi brings the primate journey to its highlight. Located at elevations ranging from 1,160 to 2,607 metres above sea level, the forest takes its name from the Rukiga word for “impenetrable” and is home to almost half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

Beyond its extensive forests, Murchison Falls is home to one of Uganda’s largest populations of Rothschild’s giraffes, as well as 76 mammal species and more than 450 bird species. Queen Elizabeth National Park is known for its tree-climbing lions and is home to more than 600 recorded bird species. Lake Mburo, around one-fifth of which consists of wetlands, is one of the few national parks in Uganda where Böhm’s zebra can still be found. Two shoebill excursions, in Mabamba and at Lake Albert, frame the western part of the journey.

This safari is about more than just watching wildlife. It is an opportunity to experience conservation in action and gain a deeper understanding of the work taking place on the ground. From community-led gorilla conservation in Bwindi and long-term chimpanzee research in the Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve to targeted efforts to protect the Rothschild’s giraffe.

By visiting these parks, you contribute to conservation funding, support anti-poaching patrols and help fund the research that plays a role in protecting Uganda’s wildlife.
