Volunteering in the Seychelles – Feedback: Seven questions for Julia

1) Could you give us a brief overview of your tasks in the project?

Early in the morning we started our day with the beach patrol at all three beach sections of the island. This includes the detection of new turtle nests and traces of turtles that were on the beach without laying eggs. We checked all the nests that were already marked for damage or signs that babies were about to hatch. On all beaches we collected garbage, which was then weighed, sorted and entered into a database.

Afterwards there was enough time for vegetation. In the nursery, our tasks included planting and repotting seedlings. Larger plants and trees were planted in different places on the island by us.

A beautiful and quite frequent task was snorkeling. Equipped with an underwater camera and snorkel we went to the different beaches to take pictures of the local fish. These were identified using various tools and entered into a database.

2) What was the biggest challenge for you during the project?

There were actually no major challenges. I got along very well with all the tasks.

3) Was there something you liked most? Or something you remember particularly negatively?

The excellent preparation provided by Natucate with all the important information. My entire time on the island - supporting this unique project, being out in nature and spending time with wonderful people – was fantastic!

4) Did you have certain expectations before travelling to the project/course?

I had the expectation to have a very special and unforgettable time as part of this project – and yes, my expectations have been exceeded! This experience is beyond fantastic and the project is incredibly great!

5) Have you done anything in your free time that you can recommend to future participants?

The three different hiking trails to incredible vantage points overlooking the island with its beaches. Especially recommended at sunrise! Watch sunsets and go swimming as often as you can!

6) What recommendations would you give to other participants?

Take little private clothing with you. But a large memory card for your mobile phone and maybe an own underwater camera.

7) Can you estimate how many additional costs you had on site?

I used about 100€ for soft drinks, sweets, alcoholic drinks, detergents and mosquito spray...
