During my first visit to Ruaha National Park, the vast solitude made it instantly clear that it would be a safari unlike any I had ever experienced. The journey into southern Ruaha offers a unique opportunity to experience Tanzania away from the usual safari routes, where the park’s vastness dominates every mile.

Experiencing the magic of Usangu Expedition Camp

The miombo woodland dominates the drive to camp, slowly unfolding its complexities in wingbeats and hurried movements of the species that occupy the rugged terrain.

Usangu Expedition Camp appears, balanced between the woodlands and the open floodplain, muted colours echo the textures of the surroundings. Understated and uncomplicated, the camp’s design places the wilderness on centre stage.

As the day turned to dusk, the glow of the campfire drew everyone inward, creating a space where stories were shared beneath the stars, and a quiet sense of freedom settled in my heart as we shared dinner around the flickering flames.

Over the next few days, we explored the multiple habitats, from sandy river banks etched with fresh lion tracks to the lush green Usangu wetland. Sightings flow without haste, pressure or congestion, unfolding authentically.

A personal core memory of mine developed as a spirited birding challenge with our guides, racing to identify elusive species hidden along the riverbanks, plains, and woodlands, laughter and excitement filled each drive. A reminder that in Ruaha, every encounter, from the mighty elephant to the smallest bird, is a rare gift of freedom and discovery.

Unforgettable moments at Jabali Ridge Camp

Transferring north toward Jabali Ridge Camp, the terrain begins to rise and fold, changing from miombo woodlands into rocky outcrops and ancient stretches of baobabs. Perched among the massive granite boulders, Jabali Ridge emerges as if carved from the rock itself.

Exploring the thickets winding around the dry Mwagusi riverbed, our talented guides brought the subtle connections among all elements of nature to life. They not only pointed out tracks or identified species, but they also translated the landscape.

They spoke of the river not as absent, but as resting on the dry bed, a temporary illusion; they explained how pathways carved by elephants inadvertently create corridors for smaller species. Through their storytelling, the thickets and plains expanded beyond surface observations.

In the shade of baobabs, we reminisced about the unforgettable moments, encounters, and connections we shared. From the vantage point of Jabali's deck, we enjoyed the East African sun poolside, having lunch outdoors.

Sitting at the foot of the Kilimatonge mountain, we watch yet another picturesque sunset sink over the horizon, as elephants move slowly through the savanna.

The memories created during the stay at Jabali Ridge reinforced that it's not just a camp, but a place that settled in my heart long after the day ended. Authentic and elevated, the camp is refined yet still captures the wild essence of Ruaha National Park. Jabali Ridge Camp rests in quiet luxury.

Together, Usangu Expedition camp and Jabali Ridge camp tell a complete story of Ruaha National Park, in contrast and cohesion. An intimate rendering of Ruaha’s wild heart, where each horizon feels entirely your own.
