Our PWE Wild Maldives invites you to mindfully explore the Maldives’ extraordinary marine life in a small group, with respectful encounters and meaningful insights into conservation.

Arrival in the Maldives

Your journey begins at Velana International Airport (Malé), where you’ll meet your tour leader and fellow travellers.

From there, enjoy a scenic speedboat transfer to the MV Akoya Pearl. Once on board, the group will receive a safety briefing and an introduction to the PWE Maldives philosophy.

Accommodation in the Maldives

Based on the 30-meter Turkish gulet MV Akoya Pearl, the vessel offers five comfortable, air-conditioned cabins with private en-suite bathrooms, each shared by two participants.

The Akoya Pearl features indoor and outdoor dining areas, a sun deck, and communal spaces for relaxation and presentations. Understated and elegant, it provides the perfect base for an unforgettable marine slow-travel adventure.

Activities during the PWE

During PWE Wild Maldives, you’ll visit some of the Maldives’ best manta ray aggregation sites. The itinerary is flexible, adapting to sea conditions, weather, and marine life activity. While snorkelling in clear waters, expert guides will interpret the underwater world and collect important data as you explore.

Beyond time in the water, the journey is enriched with engaging discussions on marine conservation and the growing challenges facing coral reef ecosystems. You’ll also support the MWSRP by observing whale sharks.

Food and leisure during the PWE

Talented on-board chefs prepare fresh meals daily, blending Western cuisines with traditional Maldivian flavors, serving three meals and snacks. Unlimited tea, coffee, and drinking water are always available — perfect for enjoying while taking in the stunning ocean views. Additional soft drinks and alcoholic beverages can be purchased.

World-renowned for its manta ray and whale shark aggregations, South Ari Atoll is one of the Maldives’ most remarkable marine regions. Like many popular destinations, it faces pressures from unsustainable tourism and boat traffic, which can stress wildlife and damage coral reefs.

We cooperate in close partnership with the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP), supporting vital research on whale sharks, manta rays, and other megafauna, while promoting responsible tourism.

Your trip to the Maldives

Upon arrival at Velana International Airport (Malé), you’ll meet your tour leader and fellow explorers before departing the island by speedboat for the MV Akoya Pearl — a two-hour journey. You can let your gaze wander into the distance, breathe in the sea breeze and slowly settle into your upcoming adventure.

As this is an ocean-based trip, the transfer begins early to avoid rough waters. The speedboat ride can be lively and often wet, so we recommend packing a waterproof bag for your clothing and a reusable waterproof pouch for important documents. Once on board the MV Akoya Pearl, the group will receive a safety briefing and an introduction to the first day of PWE Wild Maldives.
Accommodation

Akoya Pearl

The locally crafted Akoya Pearl is a 30-metre gulet-style vessel designed for an intimate and immersive marine expedition. Over 13 nights aboard, a maximum of 10 guests enjoy a personal yet communal experience, supported by a dedicated crew including an on-board chef.

The vessel features five nautically styled cabins — two doubles, two twin bunks, and one triple (one double and one single) — each shared with a fellow PWE participant. All cabins come with air conditioning and private en-suite bathrooms with a hot shower, wash basin, and toilet.

With thoughtfully designed indoor and outdoor spaces, you can rest, write, sketch, or quietly observe the ocean. Essential devices can still be powered when needed, ensuring you can stay connected without disrupting the slow-travel experience.

As an expedition vessel, the Akoya Pearl runs a generator continuously to power air conditioning, lighting, and refrigeration, meaning a gentle background hum is part of life at sea. Simple yet welcoming, the Akoya Pearl provides the perfect floating base for your 13-night wilderness adventure, combining comfort, functionality, and purpose.

Daily schedule during the PWE
Over the 13-night itinerary, the group explores the South Marine Protected Area, observing and collecting valuable data on marine life while immersing themselves in the natural beauty of the Maldives.

Daily activities are guided by weather and sea conditions, ensuring safety and comfort while maximizing marine encounters. On days when the weather is less favourable, the group may spend more time on land — an opportunity to visit famous sandbanks, local villages, or shops for supplies, and simply stretch your legs.

A typical day could look like this:
- Morning – Early rise to make the most of calm seas; snorkelling excursions and marine surveys guided by experts.
- Midday – Return to the MV Akoya Pearl for fresh meals, rest, and reflection. Informal discussions and workshops may take place during this time.
- Afternoon – Continued exploration: more snorkelling, guided marine observations, or data collection on species such as manta rays, whale sharks, and tropical fish.
- Evening – Group discussions, presentations, or quiet reflection on the day’s discoveries. Optional leisure time on deck to watch the sunset and enjoy the rhythm of life at sea.
- Night – Relaxation aboard the vessel, stargazing, or documenting observations and personal reflections.
The itinerary is flexible, allowing the group to respond to marine life activity and ensure meaningful encounters, blending adventure, learning, and mindful connection with the ocean.

Departure

Last day of your trip

On the day of departure, the group enjoys a last breakfast on board and absorbs the last moments on the Akoya Pearl. After breakfast and goodbyes to the crew, the group disembarks the Akoya Pearl and transfers by speedboat (2-hour journey) to Malé International Airport, by approximately 09:00.

While awaiting an international flight, moments of reflection arise. From breath taking marine encounters, and the new knowledge you have gained during the expedition, and the friendships forged along the way.
