What's included in the programme fee?

The programme fee covers your placement, accommodation, and all meals except Saturdays, plus orientation on arrival and support from English-speaking staff throughout your stay. You'll also work towards your PADI Open Water certification and join JTP research dives. Insolvency insurance is included, and we help with travel planning beforehand, from booking advice to a full information pack ahead of departure and are available for you during your travels. Not included: flights, visa costs, travel insurance, diving insurance, snacks, and drinks etc. These are yours to sort.

Do I need to meet any requirements or take medical precautions?

Talk to your doctor before you go, about vaccinations, health risks, and anything else specific to Malaysia. You'll need to be reasonably fit; the fieldwork is physical and diving is part of it. Comprehensive travel insurance is a requirement, not an option.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, full international medical cover for your entire stay, and diving insurance on top since diving's built into the programme. If you need pointing in the right direction, ask us. We can put you in touch with our local partner.

Do I need to bring any special equipment?

Yes. A torch with red and white settings (red light doesn't disturb nesting turtles), your documents plus copies, enough cash to see you through, a rain jacket, insect repellent, reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard, long trousers, a reusable bottle, snorkel mask, Type G adapter, and your own towel. You'll get a full packing list before you leave.

How long can I take part in the project?

Three weeks minimum. Extend to four, five, or six if you want more time and more responsibility.

Is there a minimum age requirement?

You need to be at least 18 years old. Good to know: The project runs from 1 March through mid-October, matching the nesting season.

Are there rules that must be followed?

Yes, and staff walk you through them on arrival. Most exist purely to protect the turtles: no white light near nests at night, careful handling around wildlife. You'll get the full briefing before your first patrol.

How do I get to the project site? Do I need to organise this myself?

Yes, flights and getting yourself to Singapore are on you. Fly in on a Saturday, sort your own accommodation for the night. Sunday, head to Mersing or Tanjung Gemok, roughly four hours by bus or car, then catch the boat to Tioman. Our partner takes over from Singapore onward. You arrive and meet the project and team on Sunday; project work begins Monday. If you need help or recommendations, feel free to ask us.

What happens when I arrive?

The Juara team meets you off the boat, shows you to your dorm, and walks you through the project, the safety rules, and what your first few days look like. Project work begins Monday.

How large is the group of volunteers?

Up to ten at a time, usually closer to eight, plus local staff. A genuine mix of nationalities working alongside the Malaysian team.

What's the accommodation like?

Air-conditioned dorms, eight people, split by gender, shared bathroom with hot water. Bedding's there; towels aren't.

Is it possible to stay with my partner?

Dorms are shared and split by gender, but friends of the same gender can usually room together. Couples wanting a room to themselves need to ask in advance, and should know it won't have air conditioning. Just get in touch and we'll sort it.

Are meals provided, or do I need to buy and prepare my own food?

Breakfast's self-service, lunch and dinner are cooked for you, every day except Saturday, when you're eating in the village at your own cost.

Are vegetarian meals available?

Yes, every day, alongside a meat option.

What language is spoken on the project?

English within the team; Malay is what you'll hear around the village.

Which animals are the focus of the conservation work?

Green Sea Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles, both nesting on Tioman's beaches.

Will I have a contact person on site?

Yes, the local team is there throughout and happy to answer whatever comes up. Also your designated Natucate expert will be reachable by phone and message.

What expenses should I expect on site? Can I withdraw money locally, and do I need local currency?

Mostly Saturday meals (RM 20–25 typically) and snacks from Juara's three small shops. Everything runs on Malaysian Ringgit. The only ATM on the island is in Tekek, none in Juara, so bring more cash than you think you'll need.

How can I stay in touch with family and friends back home?

Wi-Fi at the accommodation, decent mobile coverage across Juara. Pick up a local SIM near the jetty in Mersing on your way through.

What's the local climate like?

Tropical, humid, nesting season March to October and busiest over summer. Monsoon season runs roughly late December to March.

What happens in an emergency?

The local team's trained for it and will help you reach medical care, your insurer, or your embassy, whatever's needed.

What certificates and skills will I gain?

A completion certificate, a professional reference detailing your strengths and fieldwork, and documentation of the specific conservation skills you've picked up. Your days start early and often run late: You'll walk the beach at dawn checking for new nests, help record hatching data, and support the hatchery. Protect turtles on Tioman Island!

As a volunteer, you’ll be supporting nature conservation work directly on the ground – from monitoring nesting beaches and looking after breeding sites to reef monitoring and beach clean-ups.

Arrival on Tioman Island

You fly into Singapore on a Saturday and book your own accommodation for the night. The next day, our partner arranges your onward transfer to the coast, and then a boat crosses you over to Tioman Island. You arrive on Sunday and are introduced to the project and team.

Tasks as a volunteer

Your first three weeks are about building the fundamentals: beach patrols by day and night, recording nest data, hatchery upkeep, and watching for hatchlings emerging.

You'll also get into the water for reef health checks and fish surveys, build your freediving skills, and join workshops on plastic waste and recycling.

On land, you'll help run hatchery tours, talk to visiting school groups, and join jungle walks to learn the island's ecology.

Stay for four, five, or six weeks, and the responsibility grows with you: leading snorkel surveys, showing new volunteers the ropes, contributing to longer-term project work, and developing something of your own.

Focus of the project on Tioman Island

Tioman is a nesting ground for both Green Sea Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles. Most people will never encounter either species in the wild. Here, however, sightings of Hawksbill Turtles – a species classified as Critically Endangered – are a regular part of conservation work.

Both species display remarkable navigational instincts, returning to the very beaches where they hatched to lay their own eggs.

Yet their future is far from secure. Habitat loss, fishing, plastic pollution and climate change continue to threaten turtle populations around the world, making every successful nesting season an important step towards their survival.

While we can never guarantee a sighting, every visit supports the protection of these extraordinary animals. Nesting follows the turtles' natural rhythm, not a timetable.

Accommodation in Malaysia

Dorms sleep up to eight, split by gender, air-conditioned, with a shared bathroom and hot water. Bedding's provided; but please bring your own towel.

Wi-Fi works at the accommodation and mobile signal in Juara holds up well. Grab a local SIM near the jetty in Mersing before you head over. Pack a Type G adapter. In addition, a full kit list will follow once you're booked.

Leisure and board during the programme

Breakfast is self-service; lunch and dinner are cooked for you, mostly Malaysian dishes like noodles, curries, and fried rice, with a Western option and a vegetarian choice on the table daily. Tea, coffee, and filtered water are always available.

Saturdays, the kitchen closes, so you'll eat in the village at your own cost, a good excuse to try what's on offer. In your downtime, there are kayaks, snorkels, volleyball, and board games, plus a full day off guaranteed every week to explore the island.

Important notice – Diving

You'll work towards your PADI Open Water certification during the programme. Moreover, you'll join JTP research dives, using your diving to gather real data for the project.

One thing to sort before you arrive: diving insurance. It's not part of the programme fee, and you'll need it in place before you get in the water. If you need support with this, feel free to ask us and we'll connect you with our partner on the ground.

Land in Singapore on a Saturday and arrange your own overnight stay. Before you fly, complete Malaysia's Digital Arrival Card and double-check the visa rules for your passport.

Sunday, you're on the move again: overland to Mersing or Tanjung Gemok, then a boat across to Tioman. Our local partner supports this leg. You arrive and are introduced to the project on Sunday; project work begins on Monday.
Itinerary
Typical day as a volunteer
Most days bring three to four hours of project work, then a break before the next round of turtle work, shaped by the tides and whatever the nests call for.

Patrols happen as often after dark as at dawn. Off duty, kayaks and snorkels are ready when you are, and one full day each week belongs entirely to you.

What a typical day could look like:
- 06:30 – Breakfast (self-service)
- 07:00 – Morning patrol, checking the beach for new nests
- 09:30 – Data entry, hatchery work
- 12:30 – Lunch
- 14:00 – Free time, reef survey, or workshop

Responsibilities and activities

The work spans both the beach and the reef.

Weeks one to three:
patrols day and night, nest monitoring, data recording, hatchery maintenance, hatchling checks. In the water, you'll survey turtles and reef health, identify fish, and build your freediving technique properly, safety and buoyancy first. On land, plastic recycling workshops, marine debris assessments, snorkel safety briefings, and jungle walks where you'll start learning the island's plants and wildlife. You'll also help with reporting and talking through the project's work with visitors.

Extend to four, five, or six weeks, and you step into more:
leading snorkel surveys, running jungle walks, training the next intake of volunteers, hosting hatchery tours. You'll get a look at how conservation projects are actually run and funded, plus practical career support, CV feedback, and guidance on where a conservation path can lead. Show initiative, and you could end up leading a data team, checking survey quality, or building a small project of your own from the ground up.

You're based in Juara, in air-conditioned dorms of up to eight, split by gender, each with its own bathroom and hot water. Bedding's supplied. Wi-Fi and mobile coverage are solid across the village; pack a towel, as they're not provided.

Food follows the same rhythm throughout: self-service breakfast, cooked lunch and dinner, mostly Malaysian, always a vegetarian option, tea and coffee on tap. Saturdays you're on your own for meals, worth treating as a chance to explore the village's restaurants.

Free time means kayaks, snorkel gear, volleyball, frisbees, board games, relaxing and a guaranteed day off each week.
