Internship in Turtle Conservation, Tioman Island

On Tioman Island, you’ll become part of a conservation project for green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles, and actively support the monitoring of nesting sites, data collection and the protection of coastal and reef habitats.

Journey to Tioman Island

You will fly to Singapore on a Saturday and spend your first night in independently arranged accommodation in Singapore. The following day, you will continue to the project site, travelling by a transfer arranged by our partner before taking a boat to Tioman Island. The internship always begins on Sunday.

We are happy to assist you with planning and organising your journey if needed.

Tasks as an intern

During the first six weeks, the focus is on building core skills: daytime and night-time beach patrols, nest monitoring, data collection, hatchery maintenance, and observing hatchlings as they emerge.

You will also take part in reef health assessments, fish identification, duck diving training, and workshops on plastic recycling and waste reduction.

Recycling Station

You will guide visitors through the hatchery, deliver short presentations to school groups, and learn about island ecology during guided jungle walks.

If you choose to stay for 8, 10, or 12 weeks, you will gradually take on leadership responsibilities, including leading snorkelling surveys, training new interns, helping to develop legacy projects, and working on your own conservation initiative from concept to implementation.

Sea turtle on ocean ground

Wildlife focus of the internship

Both Green Sea Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles nest on Tioman Island.

Encounters with these remarkable marine animals are rare worldwide, but your chances of seeing one are surprisingly good around Tioman Island, where critically endangered Hawksbill Turtles are regularly spotted.

Diver watches sea turtle

Adult Green Sea Turtles feed primarily on algae and seagrass, while juveniles largely consume plankton. Hawksbill Turtles, on the other hand, are omnivores. Using their narrow, pointed beaks, they specialise in extracting sponges from crevices within coral reefs.

Please note that sightings of sea turtles cannot be guaranteed, as Mother Nature is always in control of this.

Bunk beds in the dormitory

Accommodation on Tioman Island

You will stay in air-conditioned dormitories accommodating up to eight people each, separated by gender, with shared bathrooms and hot water. Bed linen is provided, but you will need to bring your own towels.

Wi-Fi is available in the accommodation, and mobile coverage is generally reliable in Juara. Local SIM cards can be purchased from shops near the jetty in Mersing. Please note that you will need a Type G plug adapter for electrical devices. You will receive a packing list before your departure.

Leisure and board during the internship

Most meals are included throughout your stay: Breakfast is self-service, while lunch and dinner are prepared for you. Around 80% of the meals consist of Malaysian dishes such as noodles, curries, and fried rice, with the remaining meals offering more Western-style options. A vegetarian option is available every day. The kitchen is closed on Saturdays, so meals on that day are at your own expense in one of the village restaurants.

Kayaks, swimming equipment, volleyball equipment, and board games are available for use during your free time. You will also have at least one full day off each week.

Important notice - Diving

As part of the internship, you will earn your Open Water and Advanced Open Water diving certifications, as well as the Eco Diver qualification, a unique programme available only offered at limited locations and delivered by experienced diving instructors.

Please note: A personal diving insurance policy is required for all dives. This is not included in the programme fee and must be arranged before arrival. You can get in touch with us, as our local partner can support you with that.

    1. Tioman Island

Tioman Island, located off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is renowned for its lush rainforests, white sandy beaches, and vibrant coral reefs. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and rich marine biodiversity, the island provides a unique setting for hands-on conservation and unforgettable wildlife encounters.

Background about the internship in Malaysia

For many years, a local conservation project on Tioman Island has been working to protect Green Sea Turtles and critically endangered Hawksbill Turtles. The programme focuses on monitoring nesting sites around the island, from beach patrols and nest inspections to hatchery management.

Data on nesting activity, hatching success, and turtle behaviour contribute directly to the project’s scientific research. In addition, the team is actively involved in reef monitoring, plastic waste management, and environmental education programmes for both visitors and the local community of Juara.

Close collaboration with the village is an integral part of the project, ranging from shared waste management initiatives to educational visits to local schools.

Interns are supervised by experienced staff and become involved in every aspect of the project’s work, from basic field tasks to developing their own small initiatives during longer placements. This creates a continuous conservation programme sustained by successive groups of interns alongside a dedicated local team.
