Wilderness Trails Skills

To take part in this course you must be at least 18 years old and have a good knowledge of English. You don’t need any specialist knowledge. It's far more important for you to be interested in nature, enthusiastic about wildlife and willing to gain new knowledge. Please be aware that the wilderness trails skills course will take you out and about in a natural environment for a full week. This means that you’ll be carrying everything that you might need in your rucksack. We therefore recommend carefully planning what you need and packing light. A certain level of physical fitness is also highly recommended as the temperatures and walks (occasionally up to 10 km) can be strenuous enough on their own. That’s why a document concerning your state of health as well as a vaccination certificate is required from you. You should also be aware that there will be no permanent camps or sanitary facilities for the duration of the course. You also need travel insurance before departing to South Africa. Feel free to contact us if you have further questions.

Please note that the courses are not simply safari excursions. Some teaching is involved as well. However, anybody who wants to further themselves away from their normal day-to-day life will be able to handle what is expected of them. At the end of the Wilderness Trails Skills course you will be given a participation certificate. The course does not have a set content; however, it aims at educating the participants. If you have any questions, please contact us so that we can provide you with more information about the course content and the general schedule.

Details Wilderness Trails Skills

Wilderness Trails Skills

Over the course of the Wilderness trails skills course you will experience new things, expand on what you already know about the bush and learn how to live and get your bearings in an African natural environment. A professional experience to guide will take you and your group on a hike through the African wilderness, where you will be face-to-face with nature in a way that no book can teach. You will learn how to have as little impact on your environment as possible when setting up camp for the night and building a fire. In addition to setting up camp, preparing drinking water will also be one of your regular tasks during the course. You will learn how to get your bearings in a natural environment as a group, along with getting some hands-on experience with navigational tools and equipment for tracking animals. You may even track down the animal which you detected using the equipment. You will also learn how to make a quick assessment of the various situations which you can find yourself in in the wilderness. Every day on the course will make you more familiar with your environment and show you new facets of the landscape, flora and fauna.

Subjects covered in the course are:

  • PLAN for overnight stops

  • P – Position: is your position a safe one?

  • L – Location: are you located close to an escape route?

  • A – Acquisitions: are resources (water and firewood) close to hand?

  • N – Navigation: will it be easy to navigate from/to your location?

  • How to make an eco-friendly fire

  • Minimal footprint – how to guide in the bush, leaving little or no evidence of your presence

  • Navigation: using maps, compass and landmarks

  • Planning and setting up camp sites

  • Night watch

  • Planning of water supply

We realise that some of the people on our projects in Southern Africa want to see as many animals as possible in their natural environment. However, this is dependent on a number of factors. Please note that NATUCATE makes no guarantee that you will see a variety of animals, in particular the big five, as nature doesn’t always give us what we want. To make such a guarantee would be unprofessional and against our corporate philosophy.

This course is about having a unique experience in a natural environment. This course will take you and your group on foot through the African wilderness, where you will spend the night under the stars. Every evening you will work together to find a suitable location to camp down for the night. You can spend the night at the campfire, and will sleep in a sleeping bag on a mat which you will bring yourself. Members of the group will take turns keeping watch at night.
