Prior to departure

Do I need specific requirements or abilities to apply for this project?

There are no specific requirements or pre-knowledge necessary for this project. You should be physically fit, because most of the time you will be working outdoors under high temperatures. For the project in Dénia it is important that you are a good swimmer as you need to snorkel or dive from time to time. We recommend you to learn some basic Spanish to talk to the locals.

Which services are included?

NATUCATE helps you with your travel arrangements and provides you with detailed information material. Furthermore, the project fee includes accommodation as well as all project related items and the necessary equipment. The daily transfer from your accommodation to the project location is also included.

Do I need certain medical precautions or requirements?

To travel to Spain there are no specific vaccination required. A vaccination against typhus and hepatitis A are always advisable before travelling. For your time in Spain you should conclude a travel insurance. Usually all insurance companies offer a special insurance for travelling abroad. How do I arrive at my destination, do I have to organize it myself?

For your arrival by plane you should book a flight to València or Alicante. Both Airports are close to the projects and many flight connections depart and arrive there. We can help you to plan your arrival and departure, but you will need to book the flights by yourself. At the airport, you will be picked up by a local staff member and taken to your accommodation.

During the project

What is my main function?

Core Tasks of your Voluntary Work in València are:

  • Conserving ecologically important habitats in the Valencia region
  • Protecting and conserving the sand dune systems, beaches and other ecosystems
  • Safeguarding turtles
  • Preserving and regenerating the habitats of bird species, as well as marking out habitats
  • Studying the flora and fauna; collecting data and quantifying populations
  • Reforestation with native plant species and forest fire prevention
  • Removing invasive foreign vegetation and general upkeep of the National Park and its surroundings

Core Tasks of your Voluntary Work in Dénia are:

  • Monitoring whales, dolphins and seabirds
  • Studying and collecting data about the wildlife and plant life of the coastal and marine ecosystems. Snorkelling and diving where necessary
  • Protecting and conserving wetland areas
  • Safeguarding turtles
  • Maintaining and restoring the coastal and marine ecosystems
  • Reforestation and forest fire prevention
  • Identifying animal and plant species
How big is the group?

In Dénia there a maximum 9 volunteers at the same time. In València, there are 8.

Life on site

What is the accommodation like?

During your time in the project you will be living in a fully equipped apartment. Here you will live together with the other volunteers either in a single or double room. Both houses in Dénia and València are close to public transportation.

Is it possible to get placed with a partner or friend?

In general, it is no problem to stay at a room with your travel partner. But it depends on the time of your booking and the availability at the project.

How is the food provided?

You can prepare your meals at the apartment and need to get your food yourself. The apartments are situated very central so there should be no problem to go grocery shopping.

Is it possible to receive vegetarian meals?

A vegetarian or vegan diet is no problem, as you are responsible for your meals by yourself.

How are working hours and free time divided?

Your working hours at both project locations is from Monday till Friday between 8 am and 1 pm. In the afternoon and the weekends, you will have plenty of time for free time activities.

How can I spend my free time?

In València and Dénia you can spend your day at the beach and enjoy the good weather or go sightseeing in the city. For an active activity, you could go sailing or swimming as well. The weekends give you the time to explore the bigger cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, or Granada. Our local staff will be happy to help you to plan your free time activity. They know a lot of interesting places and secret travel advices they can share with you.

Do I have a contact person on site?

Our local staff are available for you at the project location and you can also contact NATUCATE during your time in the project.

What costs do I have to expect during the project? Can I withdraw cash on site and do I have to pay in local currency?

You need to think about costs for food and free time activities. In the cities, you will have the opportunity to withdraw money.

How can I contact family and friends at home?

All apartments are equipped with WiFi. Prior to your departure you should check the costs for calls and text messaged with your provider for your mobile phone.
