Prior to departure to Hawaii

Do I need specific requirements or abilities to apply for this project?

Once you have reached 18 years or more and have sufficient English skills there is nothing that could keep you from applying to this project. Since this project requires you to be physically active we need a doctor’s certificate confirming your state of health and physical fitness. If you want to participate in diving session and work regarding the coral reefs you need to be an experienced diver and have snorkeling knowledge as well as snorkeling equipment. Furthermore you might need a Visa for your volunteering work. Depending on the duration of your stay and your destination the requirements might vary. You might check out the foreign department’s website for the Visa standards or ask the NATUCATE team directly.

Which services does the price include?

Prior to your departure we will help you organize and plan your whole stay. We will help you find a good flight and arrange your Visa application. You will be picked up from the Kahului airport and brought to the project site. Furthermore your accommodations and food will be provided, except for the nights at the hostel where you will only be provided with breakfast. Flights are not included.

Do I need certain medical precautions or requirements?

You definitely need a travel insurance to start your volunteering work with NATUCATE. We can help you find something for you. In general you need to talk to your doctor and make sure you are vaccinated against Morbilli, Mumps and Rubella. In case of injuries it is also advised to be vaccinated against Tetanus. For current information and warnings regarding your destination you should check out the homepage of the foreign department. In general the U.S is a safe country without any severe sicknesses. Still you should inform yourself beforehand on the foreign department’s website about possible risks.

What kind of equipment should I take with me?

You don’t need special clothing for the work. Dress appropriate to the weather conditions and pick clothes that can get dirty. Short pants and short sleeves are recommended for the Hawaiian climate. You will be spending a lot of time outside; there for you should consider packing a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, water bottle, mosquito repellent and rain clothes. You also need warmer clothes for the night.

Arrival in Hawaii

How do I arrive at my destination, do I have to organize it myself?

We will support you during your organization and planning process. You will have to book your flight to Kahului (OGG) airport on your own. Once you arrived at the airport, a coworker will pick you up and take you to the hostel.

What happens after my arrival?

After you arrived at the Hostel you and the other participants will take part at the vespertine presentation about the project. You will also discuss the safety conditions with the other volunteer workers. The team on site will organize your transportation to the first project site. The volunteers will get to work by car on minivan.

During the project in Hawaii

What is my main function? Can I choose my tasks and will I be working independently?

With your help you will support marine biologists and be actively involved in saving threatened marine turtles. During the project you will be monitoring the turtles on land and under water. You will help register and categorize the turtles. This way you will help to protect the marine turtles. Your tasks vary daily and depend on the daily needs. It is difficult to arrange the working depending on your priorities. You might have to fulfill work which is not on your top list. Still the team on site is trying to consider your requests.

What is the accommodation like?

During you time in Maui you will be staying at a Hostel in Wailuku or at a camp next to the beach. In general you will share your room with two or three other volunteers. You will also have a shared bathroom, a balcony, a wash machine, a TV and WiFi. At the beach camp you will sleep in tents and use shared bathrooms with external showers. At the camp you will also find a kitchen, WiFi, BBQ, sport, washing machine and drier.

Is it possible to get placed with a partner or friend?

Yes, generally it is possible, but depends on the free booking options at the hostel.

How is the food provided?

During our stay at the camp Olowalu you will be provided with three organized meals. Most of the time you will have the chance to choose your meal from a vast buffet. The Buffet will include a lot of vegetables and fruits. At the hostel you will receive freshly made pancakes in the mornings. For lunch and dinner you will have to take care of your own.

Is it possible to receive vegetarian meals?

It is possible to follow a vegetarian diet. Please inform us about your diet beforehand.

How are work time and free time divided?

The project lasts around 20 days. You will be working 14 days in different sector and receive 6 days off (this includes arrival and departure day).

How can I spend my free time?

After your daily work you will be spending the nights at the beach or at the common area at the hostel together with the other participants. You can get a shuttle service and head over to Kanaha Beach Park or to other cities close by. One Highlight is the hike up to the top of Haleakala from where you can witness the most beautiful sun set or sun rise. You can also test your surfing skills at the northern coast of Maui.

Do I have a contact person on site?

On site you will be working with a team of volunteers and marine biologists. The Experts will be your supervisors and may help you with your concerns.

What kind of cost do I have to expect during the project? Can I withdraw cash on site and do I have to pay in local currency?

You will need money for your free time at the hostel. In general you will not have any other kind of spending during the project since accommodation and food is provided. But you might need money for free time activities, trips, wash saloon or additional snacks you want to purchase. You can withdraw cash at the airport or any city.

How can I contact family and friends at home?

You will have a WiFi access at the hostel as well as the beach camp. To save some money you can consider purchasing a prepaid card. You can also visit some Internet Cafés.

What’s the weather like?

Maui has two weather seasons. The winter months November to April have temperature around 20-30 °C and a lot of precipitation. The summer months barely have any rain and temperatures rise up to over 20 °C. The water temperatures vary from 23 °C to 27 °C.

Is there a prohibition regarding alcohol?

The drinking age in the USA is 21. It is also not allowed to drink alcohol on the street in public. We ask you to follow these rules and respect the conditions.
